For the 1993-94 season Sampdoria bolstered its team with the arrival of the British Platt and the Dutch Gullit. In the league, Sampdoria secured five victories out of the first seven games. However, on October 14, 1993, the club faced a profound tragedy with the passing of president Paolo Mantovani, the architect of the club’s most illustrious era. His son, Enrico, took over the presidency, continuing the family legacy.
After a remarkable comeback, Sampdoria challenged Juventus for the league title but ultimately finished third at the halfway point. Despite this setback, the club secured third place in the championship, which was further solidified by their victory in the Italian Cup, leading to qualification for the Cup Winners’ Cup.
